How to Replace Your Staircase Railing

If you have staircase railings in your home, odds are that they are one of the 2 popular types. In one type, the rail is affixed to the wall with brackets & can be replaced easily with a few basic tools. The other common type of staircase railing has newel posts and horizontal bar or iron balusters and may need more planning and preparation time during replacement. You will have to remove a number of screws or bolt-type fasteners, as well as transfer the holes that accommodate the horizontal round bars or balusters.  Modern Stair Railing Iron Baluster- or Spindle-Type Railing: • Find the points where the stair railing is affixed to the newel posts &  balusters or Spindles by screw fasteners. • Unthread any screw fasteners that lock the top of the spindles to the base of the rail.  • Move to the posts that are secured to the rail.
